Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta?

The rythms of the Laxman create waves which your brain will attempt zu duplicate. The Laxman programs offer different brainwave frequencies for different purposes. Neurological research categorizes basically four brainwaves: beta, alpha, theta, delta. The "general awareness of permanent alert" (Fritz Perls) is the so-called

Beta State

The brain oscillates at a frequency of 30 to 13 Hz (cycles per second). The usual symptoms of this state are watchfulness, analytic problem solving, tension, stress, hectic activity and imbalance. (Little research has been done in the range from approx. 30 to 500 cycles per second, the so-called "high beta" or "gamma state", which is allegedly an octave higher than delta state). Creativity and learning ability are unfortunately on a low during this state. Everyone knows this state, which occurs, for example, when working with one's hands, driving a car, playing soccer, going shopping, discussing, etc. The next state is called

Alpha State

The frequency ranges from 12 to 8 Hz. In contrast to the Beta State, the Alpha State is a calmer state. It is characterised by light watchfulness, easy concentration, heightened learning and memorizing ability, as well as a feeling of unity of body and mind. This relaxed and balanced yet energized and wakeful state is experienced during light meditation. According to a hypothesis which up to now has held up under examination, the Alpha State – in contrast to the Beta state - produces self-calming neurotransmitters. People who are unable get into the Alpha State on their own because of their high excitability are lacking them. In the

Theta State

a meditative state, the brain oscillates at 7 to 4 Hz. It is characterised by deep relaxation, high creativity as well as strong imagination resp. easy access to a visionary world. We experience it during sleep and deep meditation. Theta waves are also caused by psychedelic drugs. During this state, one has access to potential otherwise unknown. Associations and interconnections are recognized in an integrated way, or in greater context. Usual perceptual patterns can be suspended (a noise can be interpreted as visual stimulation). The

Delta State (3 to 1 Hz)

is a state of deepest relaxation. We experience it only rarely because it is the state of deep sleep, trance, or deep hypnosis. Outer Body Experiences usually happen during the Delta State. All these states can be measured by EEG. Or rather, EEG measuring has made scientific research of these states possible in the first place.

How do i convert MP3 files for my Laxman

To convert different audioformats, like audio CDs, WAV-files, etc.. to MP3-format, you will need a special program. There are different programs for this purpose in the internet for free. Please choose for example from the following:

Audiograbber - www.audiograbber.de
Exact Audio Copy - www.exactaudiocopy.de
iTunes - www.apple.com

How long can I use the Laxman?

Session Duration

The duration of the pre-installed sessions averages 20 min. There is, however, no upper limit. The application of the Laxman may be compared to meditations: the longer, the higher the training effect. The minimum duration of a session should not undercut 10 min., since there will be no considerable effects beforehand. Our organism needs this time to adapt to the oscillations.

Training Times

It is beneficial to carry out the sessions regularly (best daily) at the same time of the day. If you take one in the morning, you can profit best from the positive effects during your day. Of course, you can take additional sessions if necessary – e.g. for a break at work. Two shorter sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening, have proved their value. In principle, it can be said that an increasing frequency and duration of the sessions promotes relaxation and mental abilities (concentration ability, stress resistance, refinement of sensory perception, reinforcement of PSI abilities etc.). Make sure not to be disturbed during the session (telephone, children...).

Age

Principally, there is no age restriction for the application of the Laxman. In case of children and young people there might be the possibility of a so far undetected photosensitivity, since they have not yet experienced strobe light in discos or flashing lights while driving a car (e.g. through sunlit avenues), where usually the first epileptic seizure is triggered. For persons older than 20 years who had not had an epileptic seizure yet, the possibility of photosensitivity is almost excluded. In case of this illness according to neurologists and epileptologists it is better if it is recognized when using a mental system in a safe environment as for instance in a disco or while driving a car. For persons who have already passed middle age the use of the Laxman is highly recommended. The light and sound stimulation leads to a better brain perfusion and thus improves the capacity of memory and sensory perception.

Around the Brain in 80 Days

Tips for Special Relaxation Training

For special relaxation training a lying body position, where the body is as relaxed as possible, is generally recommended. You can, however, also choose an upright body position for relaxation training. An easy strain of the body as is developed in an upright position is just as favorable to release (chronical) tensions and to relax the musculature as a lying position. Settle on the position in which you achieve the best results. If you get too sleepy in a lying position, you should think about an upright position. Of course, your progress in relaxation training is also related to habits in everyday life. Pay attention to a relaxed posture in everyday life, too. In which situations do you (unnecessarily) tense your muscles? Are these perhaps special social situations? How relaxed is your back when you sit at the desk? Which muscles do you tense while driving a car? What happens if you relax these muscles? If you have some experience with the Laxman, additional relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or autogenous training can be combined very well with audiovisual stimulation. These practices can also be converted as audio courses as MP3 files and transferred to the Laxman. So you can perform your training everywhere (e.g. during your breaks at work). Thus, you can naturally combine other techniques (e.g. superlearning, language courses, suggestions ...) with the Laxman, too.

Tips for Special Concentration Training

In order to check the progress of your power of concentration, you can count the number of interruptions of your concentration while having a session and write them down afterwards. An interruption is a situation in which your mind is no longer focused on your concentration object (see below "mentality"), even if this lasts only for one or more seconds. Please keep in mind that a rising number of interruptions can also be a consequence of refined observation. After some time of practice you can check the progress on the basis of your recordings. For a successful concentration training prolonged sessions (starting from 30 minutes daily) are especially recommended. The more often and longer you practice, the faster your concentrativeness will develop. Please, select an upright body position for your concentration training since a light strain of the body supports the concentration. The choice of the program depends on your personal disposition. Usually, the alpha state is favorable for concentration. If you tend to excitability or tiredness, however, appropriate other programs can be useful (in case of excitability rather theta or delta frequencies whereas in case of tiredness rather beta or alpha frequencies). Thus, try out different programs. In general, the pure impulse programs are more suitable for concentration training, since they offer less acoustic diversons.

The Body Position

Choose a comfortable body position. You should stay in this position during the entire session. Lying positions can make you sleepy. You can also choose an upright position, in which the body is relaxed, however not completely lackadaisical (e.g. sitting upright on a chair, armchair, or on the heels with a straight back). A slight strain is favorable for your concentration. A suitable analogy for this kind of strain might be a lurking tiger ready to jump or an oarsman waiting for the starting signal. The classical meditation positions (asanas) as known from Hatha Yoga are particularly suitable. Feel free to experiment with different positions, in the long run, however, it is better to settle on a position and maintain it. After some time a favorable mental attitude is attached to this special body position, just as one usually becomes tired when taking the usual sleeping position in bed. To summarize this: In principle each position is good in which you are successful. There is no "perfect" body position. When having longer sessions (more than 30 minutes) each position can become a bit uncomfortable. Nevertheless, try to keep the body calm and relaxed. If you have chosen your position, put on the eyeglasses and the headphones. Your first program should have a medium length (20 to 30 minutes). Select the program you like from the menu. Experiment with volume and brightness. If possible leave the contrast at 100%. The intensity of light and volume has no influence on the quality of the stimulation. Adjust the impulses as it suits you.

The Mentality

For optimal progress we first recommend to observe the contents of your mind during the session. Please, do not judge the emerging thoughts, pictures, sensations, or emotions or identify with them. Practice in the „art of pure observation“; interested, but not involved - like a biologist who studies the behavior of a rare species. You can make notes on your experiences after a session. After the first sessions, for concentration training resp. for centering your mind it is favorable to concentrate on an object. Such an object can be the sensation of raising and lowering the abdominal wall while breathing (kinesthetic object), or the visualization of a form (e.g. a ball of a defined color and size) (visual object), or the sound of a syllable, a word, or a sentence you repeat internally like a mantram (auditive object). If you note that your mind deviates from this object simply return to the object. In case a particularly interesting thought turns up, please also brush it aside for the time being and, where necessary, write it down after the session. As with the body position you can at first experiment with different objects. After some sessions you should settle on the object with which your concentration is best and maintain it. After some time a favorable condition is attached to this object. If you prefer a less intensive training, you can just let your mind drift and enjoy the session.

What Is the Ganzfeld Effect?

In the 1930's it was discovered that when people gazed into a homogeneous, featureless field of vision, they quickly and consistently entered a profoundly altered state. This featureless field of vision is called "Ganzfeld" in the technical language. In the mid-1970s two researchers (Charles Honorton and William Braud), both independently discovered the procedure of PSI research which is called the "Ganzfeld". When people are exposed to a Ganzfeld, they often experience a progression of effects that can be described as follows:

  • The size of your field of vision oscillates
  • You see a swirling Kaleidoscope of colors and forms
  • The attention turns away from the colors and is extremely focused on internal processes.
  • All color drains from your field of vision

Ganzfeld is applied in the following ways:

  • Instant meditation
  • Self hypnosis
  • Astral journeys and past lives regressions
  • Psychic abilities
  • Visualizations
  • Creativity
  • Relaxation
  • Self healing and recovery

In the "Ganzfeld PSI Experiments" the optical aspect (Ganzfeld), after which the parapsychic method was named, is extended by the following arrangements:

  • Acoustic white noise (radio noise between two transmitters via headphones)
  • Avoiding tactile stimulation by a still body position on a comfortable mat and complete muscle relaxation
How Does Color Therapy Work?

Each color of the color spectrum vibrates at a specific frequency and can thus be related to certain organs and sounds. This connection can be taken into account for session programming or the manual settings of the device.

What Are Binaural Beats?
Binaural Beats

The Laxman supports the principle of binaural beats, which has been developed in the 70's in the Monroe Institute. Acoustic beats are produced which directly stimulate the brainwaves, thus immediately influencing the mood. The brain has the tendency to merge coherent sounds of nearly similar frequencies, which are presented one to each ear and eye, into one signal. This happens in order to ensure an unambiguousness in the data processing. The binaural beats use this mechanism to induce intensified activity in certain frequency ranges of the brainwaves. If for instance a sound of a frequency of 340 cycles per second is presented to the right ear, and a frequency of 350 cycles per second to the left ear, the frequency difference of 10 cycles per second leads to an intensified activity in the wave spectrum of the brain. As can be measured by means of a conventional EEG, the resonance occurs in a fraction of a second. Measurements of the Monroe Institute have shown that there are significant brainwave points in the four prevailing moods unrest, concentration, creativity, and relaxation. In addition to the frequency following response the Laxman systematically applies binaural beats to influence the prevailing moods. Thus, conditions such as relaxation or concentration can be quickly achieved with the Laxman. The effect usually continues for several hours and can therefore be applied before examinations as well as for quick sleep.

About the Interaction of Brainwaves and Moods

Our brain oscillates with various frequencies, which are made visible by EEG measurements. It is the movement of the electrons through the nerve tracts which produces a measurable electrical field. Different frequency ranges are directly connected to different states of consciousness and physical processes. The measuring unit of these frequencies is called Hertz (Hz) and means cycles per second. EEG measurements have shown that these frequencies can be affected by applying a pulse frequency to the body. In case of the Laxman these frequencies are obtained by light and sound. The principle behind this effect is called „Frequency Following Response“ and says that the brain will attempt to duplicate the frequency perceived by the sense organs. It is the same principle why gazing into a flickering campfire or a glittering aquarium is relaxing. It is the same effect which schamans use when dancing around a campfire to rythmic drum beats to induce other states of consciousness or even trance. The rule of thumb is that higher frequencies (starting from approx. 10 cycles per second) rather affect the mental range (such as power of concentration/mental power, the treatment of depressions and anxiety states, etc ...) whereas lower frequencies rather affect physical and/or regenerative functions (such as pain treatment, wound healing, treatment of sleeplessness, etc ...). Neurological research categorizes basically four brainwaves: The "general awareness of permanent alert" (Fritz Perls) is the so-called Beta State. Creativity and learning ability are on a low during this state. Everyone knows this state, which occurs, for example, when working with one's hands, driving a car, playing soccer, going shopping, discussing, etc. The next state is called Alpha State. In the Theta State, a meditative state, the brain oscillates at 7 to 4 Hz. The Delta State (3 to 1 Hz) is a state of deepest relaxation. We experience it only rarely because it is the state of deep sleep, trance, or deep hypnosis. Outer Body Experiences usually happen during the Delta State. All these states can be measured by EEG. Or rather, EEG measuring has made scientific research of these states possible in the first place.

Do the All-Color-Ganzfeld-Goggle Fit on All Faces?

The patented All-Color-Ganzfeld-Goggle are made from a flexible and anti-allergy material. The present form of the eyeglasses is the result of numerous tests to ensure the greatest possible compatibility with different face forms. The replaceable skin-friendly head band can be easily adjusted and/or changed and cleaned.

Can I Charge Batteries in the Device?

A charge function is not available, since there is danger of explosion if rechargeable batteries are confounded with normal ones. For reasons of flexibility, however, the Laxman shall be able to be operated with usual batteries, too. However, the Laxman is compatible with all commercial rechargeable batteries of type AA, which can be charged with appropriate battery chargers.

Can I Compensate Lack of Light with the Laxman?

It has been proven that there is a connection between light and the release of "happy" neurotransmitters. A lack of light, e.g. in the winter, may lead to depressions. The release of these neurotransmitters requires a minimum brightness of 1.000 lux. The maximum brightness of the Laxman offers a much higher light intensity and is thus very well suited to compensate a lack of light.

How Do I learn better with the Laxman?

Learning by Osmosis The Laxman supports the receptiveness and long term memory characteristics of the brain and is very well suited for learning preparation and reinforcement as well as an attendant. Special relaxation programs which promote an increase of the attention are especially suitable for learning preparation. They lead to a promotion of the so-called alpha state and increase the cerebral perfusion. Some contents, e.g. auditive language courses, can be directly uploaded to the device and learned with appropriate sessions. Various contents can be easily integrated and exchanged by a memory card. For learning reinforcement there are also special programs available, which support the retention of learned contents in the long term memory. This takes place by a promotion of the so-called theta state. Thus, the Laxman is especially suitable for training and coaching institutions, as well as in all situations where complex contents have to be learned and memorized within a short time.

Actually there are several ways to use the Laxman for learning: One way is just to make a session before assimilating new stuff. For example the 'PreLearn-Session'. But every session in the Alpha-Range, i.e. around 10 Hz will do fine. This will sharpen the concentration and 'opens' the memory.Another way is, to put the content, which you have to learn into the Laxman (as MP3) and combine it with a random-session or a manual session. You may also loop the audiomaterial into the AUX-jack and use the session 'Learn'. This, of course, just works, if the content is in an audio format already. Take also Alpha-Sessions for this purpose. The third possibilty is, to anchor the learning content *after* the learning process. Take the 'PostLearn' or any other Theta-Session (4 - 8 Hz).Since the best way depends on the circumstances as well as on the individual disposition, I recommend to experiment a little bit with several methods and sessions to figure out which one works best for you. You may also have a look to the Laxman-handbook page 13 for further informations to use the Laxman for learning. Actually there is no need for new sessions for this purpose. All you need is already installed on the Laxman. Find recapitulatory study results concerning the use of audiovisual stimulation for learning in our rubric "studies".

How Do I Use the Laxman to Support Meditation?

More than 35 different studies have shown that during meditation the activity of the alpha waves in the brain rises clearly. More than 25 investigations have proven that during meditations the activities of the left and right brain hemisphere are balanced, the so-called brain hemisphere synchronization – an effect which is supported by the Laxman by the so-called binaural beats. To support your meditation select a pure impulse session, i.e. a session without music or ambient background, since this can easily divert your mind from the meditation object. How to Support Hypnosis with the Laxman?

The Laxman as Hypnosis Support For hypnosis delta frequencies are primarily suitable. Special suggestions (in form of a MP3 file or parallelly recorded by means of a mixer) can be excellently combined with the Laxman.

Questions about LaxEdit

What Are the Possibilities of LaxEdit?

LaxEdit is the editor software for creating own sessions for the Laxman. You can open any MP3-file (e.g. music, suggestions, audio books, vocabulary etc.) in the software and place precise color and frequency events with the help of an intuitive time line or an analytic table. Afterwards, you transfer the produced lax file together with the respective MP3 to the Laxman by means of the provided USB cable. The session now appears in the Laxman menu and can be used like the pre-installed sessions. For converting audio formats into MP3 format (e.g. from a CD or self-made suggestions) you can download the MP3 converter from our download section free of charge.

Can I Create My Own Sessions without LaxEdit?

Also without LaxEdit you can set the frequency, color, sound and other parameters by means of the menu item "manual settings". These individual settings can be played optionally with or without any MP3. If you do not want to set the "manual settings" you can also select one of the "random sessions". The random session is recreated again and again from different frequency and color ranges. However, the frequency range varies only within the desired mood range. After you have selected your random session, you can of course also select a different MP3 sound from the MP3 menu, which is automatically played together with your random session. Thus, you can comfortably transform your individual audio contents into a Laxman session, without having to create a session beforehand.
